Show Can PG boast world's youngest PTA Pres.? By MARCELLA WALKER I think we have a new one for the Guinness Book of World Records. A former Pleasant Grove gal, who now lives in Manti,- Sharon Ostler Leisek, age 22, is a PTA president. Now, surely, that is some kind of a record for the youngest PTA president or something like that. Personally, I think it is quite commendable. com-mendable. A young woman like Sharon taking on the awesome responsibilities of PTA president at such a tender age is special and I'm glad we can say she is from Pleasant Grove. This is especially interesting in view of the fact that it is getting harder and harder to get PTA presidents. Valley View School this year almost had to disband its PTA when no one would consent to becoming PTA president for next year. Finally, after a long silence at the last general PTA meeting at the school, a brave soul volunteered to do the job. And, it is a job. There is a lot involved in being PTA president. There are not a lot of "thank yous" either, but there is a lot of satisfaction when the year is over and your job is done. The junior high school found itself without a PTA president last fall and who did they finally get to fill the-position? the-position? No one but Linda Chipman who has served as president at Valley View, the junior high previously, and the Pleasant Grove Council. Thank goodness there are a few stalwarts who will step in and do the job someone else has abandoned. I speak from experience. It seems that I have worked in the PTA every year since my first child entered p.g. blab first grade back in 1967. This is not a spectacular record because many people have served longer, but it has been fun. What could be neater than being a room mother and getting to go on all those little field trips with the children, or bringing treats for Halloween, Christmas, Valentines and Easter? I have made a lot of cupcakes with green coconut and jelly beans on top. Re-doing the bylaws every few years is a fun job that no one likes but which I have done and I survived. sur-vived. I wouldn't have missed the opportunity op-portunity of taking pictures of the Vikings of the Month at Pleasant Grove High School for the past several years as I have served as the public relations person for that PTA board. Yes, I'll still be doing it again next year. One of the nice things about working on the PTA board is being able to walk the halls of the schools, mingle with the students, meet the teachers and tease the principals and assistant principals. You definitely know what is going on in the schools that way and if you see things you'd like to change you can talk to someone about it. people gripe but never do anything about it. They never serve in the PTA where they could make their feelings heard and at the same time give service where it is badly needed. While on the subject of schools, I have a hard time understanding how the tried and true students at Pleasant Grove High School can put up with a red trash can out by the north west driveway. Someone ought to definitely paint it blue, don't you think? Pleasant Grove High's soccer team has taken first place in region and will begin play in the state tournament this week. Soccer is a new game to me. They did not play soccer in America very much when I was young. In fact, soccer popularity came along too late in Pleasant Grove for my boys to get involved in it as children. Now, all the children in town play soccer.- So, I decided to go to some soccer games this year. I still don't really understand all the rules, but I understand un-derstand more than I did and it is quite a fun sport to watch. I'd hate to be the goallie with all that area to cover with just my body as a ball blocker. I'd hate to be a player and get my shins kicked all the time. Does it hurt to hit the ball with your head? I have observed several tv, though. 1. One of the refere they have had at the soccer Ban, real cute. 2. I like to & assistant coach, Jorge of Tjga J talk with his neat accent. 3. way Coach Jackman does not coa tf He chats and that is nice. I still do not understand the m sides rules, in bounds play, andai of other stuff but what I J01 learned has shown that the gameVe fun and very competitive becaJ! there is lots of action, like basket ball. We watched BYU play rugby af weeks ago and that is totally Con fusing. It looked worse than sow for learning the rules. It must be hard to be an athlete in the spring time. There is so much In do and you cannot do everything There is baseball which is lots of & and gets you ready to play ball jl summer long on some team J another, even after school ball is m over. There is tennis, always a hm sport, and track, my goodness, that is a sport where all different types of bodies can participate. On top of thai there is soccer. The crowds have been increasing at the soccer games and that is good sign. It means people either like the game, have a boy playing, or like to look a t the referees up close ' As Pleasant Grove heads out for the state soccer tournament, lets have lots of fans out to give them support, just like we did infootball and basketball. Pleasant Grove has been leaving its mark the past few years in 3A ball, one way or another. Keep up the good work, guys and gals! |
