Show funny bone Lay of fa da kids ! By MARY CQONS j Well, the Easter Egg Hunt was a success, if you can gauge it by the j compliments that came back from the parents and the children. I understand the children. They were there to find eggs. I don't, however, always understand the parents. Why? Because there a few parents who expect their two to five year-old children to be aggressive. "Now, go get an eggi" they would "' admonish the little ones. An egg. That's interesting, as the children that age were probably forbidden to touch the eggs in the refrigerator, and now, suddenly, mom and dad are telling them to find an egg under a tree. Probably just a little confusing. Another observation. I notice, from time to time, that many parents are concerned with whether or not their children are winning, not for the sake of the children, but for the sake of the parent's ego. We, as adults, have had our day, and I don't think we can expect our children to fulfill our ambitions and dreams. I think children have a right to their own dreams. We all know the advantages of children having positive experiences that help to build their self-images. But I have v heard so many parents that take that philosophy and bend it all out of shape by screaming at the umpires and referees at games, and setting an example for their children that the world needs to be screamed at in order to get their way. We, as parents are really "amateurs. ..We've never done this before, and we need to learn, with and on the children who have been entrusted to us. It's not easy. We all have a lot of room to grow, as adults. So do our children, and I wish we all had the foresight to allow children to hunt their own eggs and play their own games in this world. They need that freedom to make mistakes, and learn from them. If they don't make some small ones when they are young, and find out that mom and dad really do know what they are talking about, they'll tend to make some humdingers when they are older. It sure would have been easier if they had been born with an instruction manual, wouldn't it have been? |
