Show Flaming Gorge - Outdoor Playground Discover for yourself one of the greatest outdoor playgrounds in the west. Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area is an expansive and beautiful recreation paradise offering a wide spectrum of activities ranging from the excitement of running the Green River to the serenity of sightseeing and bird watching. There are year-round outdoor opportunities for everyone. There is picnicking and camping with over two dozen campgrounds, set in a variety of terrains. Enjoy boating through the veriegated walled canyons or along the rolling deserts of Wyoming. There are several marinas along the way to provide the boater with gas and other supplies. Swimming and waterskiing are also popular sports on the lake. In the fall, there is big game hunting; and in the winter, snowmobiling and cross-country skiing through beautiful, frosted forests and meadows. Flaming Gorge Lake is widely known for its trophy fishing, producing Utah State record Lake Trout, Rainbow Trout, Small Mouth Bass, and world record German Brown Trout Flaming Gorge Recreation Area is located in the northeastern corner of Utah and the southwestern portion of Wyoming. The reservoir is 91 miles long and has over 65 square miles of water surface. It extends from Ponderosa covered mountains in the southern part of the area to plains and desert in the north. An abundance of wildlife inhabit the area and can often be seen by the fortunate traveler. The antelope run freely in the deserts, while the mountains shelter moose, eld and deer. Rising 502 feet, Flaming Gorge Dam is open daily for self-guided tours spring through fall. The visitor center at the Dam provides interesting information on the area through movies, photos and displays. Red Canyon Overlook and Visitor Center affords the viewer a panoramic scene of canyon walls towering 1500 feet over the lake below. The High Uinta Mountains climb southwest of the reservoir. Serene mountain lakes and streams provide fishing and backpacking opportunities for those who like to get away by themselves. A few of these high lush areas are accessible by road.
