Show Deadline Close For Miss Indian Scholarship Pageant Deadline for Indian girls to get in their applications for the Miss Indian Scholarship Pageant is close - Feb. 28, 1981 - according to Doreen Hendrickson, executive director. To enter an official Miss America Preminiary Pageant, the basic requirements are to be a female between the ages of 17 and 26 on Labor Day, a high school graduate by the time of the Miss Utah Pageant (June 16-20), 16-20), single and never having been married or had a marriage an-nuled, an-nuled, of good moral character, and a citizen of the United States. Ms. Hendrickson wants to stress the fact that the Miss Indian Scholarship, Miss Utah, and Miss America are not beauty pageants, but scholarship pageants. The Miss U.S.A. Pageant and its state affiliations, on the other hand, "Strictly consider beauty, swimsuits, personality and evening gowns," according to Mrs. Jann Wyler, producer of the Utah Miss U.S.A. Pageant. "A major difference between the two pageants lies in the awards to participants," par-ticipants," according to Norm Nielson, state director for the Miss Utah Pageant. Prizes for the Miss America Pageant are strictly -scholarships, except for wardrobe - allowances given to state winners. "The women never see the money," said Nielson, unless they go to school." Thus the pageant is a way to help young women further their education by recognizing their talents, "much in the way men have athletic scholarships," Nielson continued. Ms. Hendrickson also stresses the fact that participants do not have to get a sponsor and pay to enter. All the people working with the pageant volunteer their time and the pageant relys on donations to carry it through. "Win or lose we try to give the girls a feeling of accomplishment ac-complishment and try to make it well worth their time to enter," according ac-cording to Hendrickson. The pageant is going to be held Saturday, March 21, in the Orem Jr. High, starting at 8 p.m. The winner of the first Miss Indian Scholarship Pageant, Jean Bullard, the current Miss Utah, will be emceeing the program, as well as performing.
