Show THURSDAY, OCTOBER 4 1979 THURSDAY, OCIOBtK 4, 1979 PLEASANT GROVE REVIEW, PLEASANT GROVE, UTAH Vikings Do Well in First Half by Craig Swapp and Doug Hooley Last Friday night in Region Six football ac tion the Pleasant Grove Vikings stunned the DEFENSE These seven Viking defensive players will be countedon to take it to A.F. Friday at 3 p.m. L. to R, Craig Cook, Todd Kitchen, Justin Bone, Brad Baxter, Dave Fullmer, Rex Harding, and Jim Moore. They battered Provo for three quarters last week in losing cause. Provo Bulldogs with their tough first half play. Senior fullback Mike Fryer rushed for 103 yards and 2 touchdowns as the Vikes battled the Bulldogs to a 14-- 6 halftime score. The vikings took the opening kick off but failed to move their of-fensive squad up the field. Trading posses-sion of the ball the bulldogs went right to work on the first play with a 60 yard bomb that ended in a T.D. P.G. again failed to get their offense mov-ing and once again Pro-vo went to work both passing and running to capatalize with a 5 yard Q.B. sweep and they led 14-0- . P.G. then took over on their own 20 yard line and got the offense moving with big yar-dage up the middle with excellent blocking by the front five and tough running by Jeff Jackson and Fryer. Fryer scored on a 36 yard touchdown run. The Vikes on defense shut Provo off in the se-cond quarter with the defense holding the Bulldogs to only five yards rushing with ex-cellent defensive efforts by Dave Fullmer, who had three sacks and teammates Brad Bax-ter and Craig Cook each had a sack a piece. The second half Provo came out fired up after a 14-- 6 halftime score. Provo stuck to their ground game and it pro-ved to be effective while the Bulldogs piled up three more touchdowns in the third quarter. The fourth quarter the Viking defense stif-fened with a key in-terception by Jeff Jackson with a good return giving the Vikes field position for their offense to move down the field for a Fryer 4 yard T.D. run. The two point conver-sion was unsuccessful making the final score 35-1- Tomorrow the Vikes host thier arch-rival- s American Fork at 3 p.m. by Jack Hill The "Season within a season." Thats what the an-nual P.G. - A.F. game is called and tomorrows battle is no exception. Regardless of the records, the Vikes and Cavemen know that to win this game makes the "season." American Fork is 3-- 2 on the year, having lost to Timpview last week and Provo earlier in the year. P.G. bruised Provo for three quarters last Friday, causing the Bulldog coach to state; "P.G.'s the most physical team we have faced". Of course Coach Bluths squad will be sky high when A.F. comes to town tomor-row for the 3 p.m. kickoff. Stopping big Bruce Hansen will be no easy chore but emotion plays a big role in heated rivalries, and P.G. will have plenty for the game. Barry Laga directs the Vikings attack that saw Mike Fryer rush for 103 yards and two touchdowns against undefeated Provo. If P.G.s hard hitting defense can put together another rugg-ed game, the Vikes could provide local fans with a very interesting afternoon.
