Show Bill Jones Talks About Opponents Vote Record Bill Jones, Republican candidate for Utah State Senate from Northern Utah County, said that his opponent for the District 14 seat has shown a more than 95 percent voting record for legislation that either raised taxes or increased government powers. Over the past five sessions of the state legislature, incumbent Earnest H. Dean has voted in favor of increased in-creased taxes or broader government powers a total of 565 times. He has voted against such legislation only 27 times, according to Jones. The Republican challenger said the analysis of Sen. Dean's voting record was commissioned in order to present an accurate picture of the kinds of legislation supported and opposed by the incumbent state senator. "Our study of the taxing and administrative ad-ministrative rulemaking rule-making legislation shows that in the last BILLJONES ten years, legislation supported by Mr. Dean on just sales and income taxes cost the taxpayers tax-payers in Utah $70,000,000.00 in one year", Mr. Jones said. For example, Mr. Dean supported an increase in all income brackets of our state income tax, and twice voted against lowering the State Income Taxes, even in the face of very substantial state budget surpluses. "Sen. Dean has been as dedicated a legislator as Northern Utah County citizens could ask for, but his voting record on taxation and government control is somewhat astonishing. "He has been in office for 22 years and his pattern of legislative support for state government spending and government expansion ex-pansion is clear. "Times and the needs of our communities have changed since 1956 when Mr. Dean first went to the state legislature. I feel that it is time for a more conservative and business-like approach to spending legislation. "Bill Jones is a resident of Alpine, Utah County, and has been a businessman in Utah for the past 25 years. |
