Happiness is Possible For All; Face Reality by Dr. Ford McBride Timpanogos Community Mental Health Center Last week I was in a large university library. Out of in-terest, I counted the number of books that related to hap- - piness. There were over 200 listed in the card cat-alog. Reading about hap-piness can no more make us happy than buying a new pair of skis will positive environment is en-couraged. The third "A" of happiness is achievement. In order for achievement to contribute to happiness it must be significant or important. If a person makes great strides in an area and it means nothing to him the achievement will not contribute to his hap-piness. Fortunately, happiness is possible for all of us if we are willing to see life and our-selves as we are. To en-courage happiness we should be willing to accept ourselves instead of wanting to be someone else. Dr. McBride can be seen every Wednesday on Channel 11 's "Newsroom" at 6 p.m. If you have a question or topic you would like him to discuss in his column, write: Dr. M. Happiness to many people is a life without cares or major responsibility. People reason that if they can be free from responsibility there will be no frustration and anxiety, thus insuring happiness. Another belief is that material possessions lead to happiness. This idea has been fostered by different forms of mass media which depict poor people as unhappy and rich people as happy. Psychologist Elisabeth Hurlock defines happiness as having three "A's". The first "A" is acceptan-ce. A person, regardless of his age can be happy only if he feels that others like and ac-cept him. Just being liked is not enough. We must be ac-cepted by people we want to be friends with. In other wor-ds, we must be involved in caring relationships. Affection is the second "A". Social acceptance must be accompanied by affection. Affection from others enables us to cope with problems more effectively becaused a ( ., ? " I- - i .... ;!
