Vikes Will miss him. Vikings Get Going Again Drop Sp. Fork Last Week by Del Young With playoff hopes gone for the Dons and flickering for the Vikings, last year's Region VI co-champions squared off in a battle of team pride last Friday Fri-day and the Vikes came out victors 20-6. Spanish received the kickoff and moved to a first down with converted Q.B. Phil Hair carrying car-rying the ball. A Don fumble was recovered by Viking Kay Swenson to give the Vikes a chance at offense. A penalty on P.G., the first of several that totaled 95 yards for the game, stopped the drive and a Bruce Murdock punt just rolled into the end zone. The Dons took to the air but Sam Taylor, defensive guard, read a screen pass perfectly, and intercepted, giving the Vikings Vik-ings the bc.ll on the Spanish Fork 45. A clipping call on the first play moved the Vikes back to the 49 but a 28-yard screen pass, Ron Moosman to Dale Wright, gave P.G. a first down ! on the 21 where Moosman hit ! Kaylon Whiteley, who had his j man beat in the end zone. John Goodman (see photo) picked the P.A.T. for the 7-0 lead with 57 seconds remaining in the first period. Spanish was forced to punt but P.G. fumbled it back. The Dons couldn't move it and lost the ball on downs. Wright exploded ex-ploded for 25 yards but 'Don' defensive back Bob Davis intercepted in-tercepted on the next play. P.G.'s Brent Peterson returned return-ed the favor by intercepting to give P.G. good position on the 45 again. Two penalties against the Vikes, offensive interference and after puting the ball to Spanish, a ''roughing the passer" pass-er" call helped the Dons move ! to P.G.'s 33 wiVHC Vvilh J8 I seconds on the clock, Scott Johnson hit Lynn Hawkins in the end zone. I tempted kick to give P.G. a slim one point lead at halftime. Coach Paul Gillespie fired the Vikes at halftime and they quickly moved to the Spanish Fork 20 where Goodman's 35 yard field goal fell short. Third quarter action took place on the Spanish end of the field. Ted Karren blocked a Spanish Fork punt and later Peterson intercepted his second sec-ond pass, this time returning down the sideline 15 yards for the T.D. The extra point missed miss-ed but P.G. lead 13-7. As the fourth quarter started, start-ed, few expected the 12 minutes min-utes of frustration that was ahead for Pleasant Grove. Murdock hit Whiteley with an apparent 40 yard "Flea Flicker" Flic-ker" touchdown, but a motion penalty brought it back. The Vikes made one first down and on a third and 3 situation, sit-uation, Karren raced 25 yards for another apparent T.D. No good, an offside penalty nullified nul-lified T.D. number two and the Vikes lost the ball on downs. Karren promptly picked up a Spanish fumble and lateraled it to Tom Wood, who carried to the 19. Moosman threw to - Randy Story for the score that wasn't a score as off-setting penalties brought back T.D. number three. Another penalty, this one on Spanish, gave the Vikes first down on the 19 where Moosman Moos-man hit Whiteley for T.D. No. 4 A quick, but complete check of the field revealed the ab sence of yellow flags. Then and only then did the team show the enthusiasm that accompanies ac-companies a score. Joe Smith (see photo) kicked kick-ed the P.A.T. to end the day's scoring with the Vikes winning 20 to 6. Spanish filled the air with long bombs, the last of which Lonnie Wilson intercepted, returning re-turning it 30 yards down the sideline. P.G. obviously played well enough to win but fumbles and penalties left coaches and players dissatisfied. The two league losses to A.F. and to Springville have all but left the Vikings out of post season play for the first time in the last three years. An added note to the extreme ex-treme strength of Region VI this year is the fact that P.G. who is currently in third place defeated Orem who won Region Reg-ion IV in the AAA Division. Statistics PI.
