Show SALT distributing BY SLEDS I 1 BEING TRIED ON RANGE experiments attempting to prove the value of using sleds for distributing stock salt on ranges are show ing consider atile promise according to J whitney floyd extension forest forester cr at utah state agricultural college lie he reports that last year the tor for est service got a camp on the bighorn national forest to bu build ild 25 salt sleds from dead lodgepole pine cis as an experiment the sleds were about 18 x 30 inches in size six inch poles were used for run runners nersi and 4 inch poles for cross su supports A 4 or 5 inch railing around th the L top kept the salt on the sled the sleds were moved shoved several yards each time the supply of salt was re grenead neAd in order to lessen the number and size of the stomp grounds that result from leaving the salt in one place these sleds were in use during th ih summer months and in that time several facts were noted one was that national forest range land was greatly improved and a second was that there was a subs substantial saving in salt because it dis falve also the ground was not trampled wherever the salt happened to be placed nor were any salt holes formed by the pawing of stock professor floyd says that while this practice has not become common it has good possibilities and is worthy of stock mens considers lion in preparing to salt their summer ranges |
