Show city dads say no to street closing the controversy over closing aid 2 id north street to make a school playground and athletic field was definitely settled so far as the aaro wan city council is concerned by a unanimous vote of no given in their regular monthly meting on tuesday night this decision was reached after listening to arguments both pro anil and con to the proposal propos at for the past three or four months the school board asked to have hav the street closed in order to allow enough room for the construction of a standard quarter mile track oil 0 property purchased by it for an athletic field the council informed the board that they could have the sidewalks on the north and west of the property as additional ground on which to construct a track but that it would not consent to closing a street which was so vital to such a large number of people next business of importance care of at the meeting was the appointment of a new city marshal to charles timmons and D A matheson who have been night and day marshals respectively since the first of the year from which positions they resigned last week from a list of five applicants tor for the job ancil J adams was nam ed by mayor joseph and confirmed by the council for both day and night marshal other applications given consideration were from melvin robb george skinner tomas lemmon and arch benson part of these men were automatically cancelled because their applications asked for either day or night marshal jobs and the council decided that one marshal was sufficient ja 1 t wis reported to the council that water from the six six mile miff spring spring had not been reaching the city wa ter storage reservoir for several weeks due to clogs in much of the old cement pipe still in use between the four and six mile roots have grown in the pipe to the extent that water is unable to get through it after considerable discussion it t was deemed advisable to replace all of the old cement pipe between the four and five mile with new steel pipe and an order was placed for 1200 feet of new pipe it will be delivered to the scene of operation for a foot several cyp s and weights of pipe were considered before the order was placed several of the council felt that a cast iron pipe was the one to buy but it was pointed out that this type of pipe would cost about loc per foot more to buy and would be considerably more expensive to lay toe tc pipe finally settled on comes in 40 foot lengths and need caulk much less expensive ing making laying an order was placed with the am la france company for feet of new tire fire hose to replace old and worn hose that I 1 the he city is already using the purchase of some new hose has been considered for tome some time but no action was ever taken until after a small fire broke out last monday just north of the ane camp and it was discovered that the present hose wouldn I 1 reach more than one half block it 1 was shown that in some places tire fire hydrants a are re as tar far as two blos bials apart and that tha t in in case of fire it would be utterly present hose to reach it mayor joseph told the council that application for funds irom the state license plate lud iud lu d mut be mailed within the month and appointed pointed the streets and sidewalks committee to make the application members of the committee ara am walter C mitchell chair chairman iaan S A halterman and ray H adams the problem of closing down dow n the cites projects lor two or three weeks was also d discussed is cussed but no action was taken on the proposal I 1 |
