In the following year, he released Solo Concerts which was voted Record of the Year by the New York Times, Downbeat Magazine and Time Magazine. Jarrett' Jar-rett' s next album, The Koln Concert swept all of the awards, became a best seller and firmly established Keith Jarrett as a solo pianist. I : J ! uy 1 l Pianist Keith Jarrett will perform one of his rare solo piano concerts on Friday, May 20 at 8 p.m. in the Capitol Theatre. This will be his first concert appearance in Salt Lake City. A Keith Jarrett solo piano recital is a one-of-a-kind musical event. Each concert is spontaneously composed and improvised. Each 40 minute half is performed non-stop and the musical direction and content is left entirely to the creative spark of the moment. The matrix which holds a solo concert together is Keith Jarrett' s piano technique based on a solid foundation of classical training and fifteen years of performing in the jazz world. Keith- Jarrett was born in 1945 i'n Allentown, Pennsylvania Pennsyl-vania and began playing the piano at the age oi 3. At 7 he was composing hh own melodies and improvising on them. He began formal composition studies at 15 and one year later, performed perform-ed his first solo piano concerts of his own works. Jarrett moved to Boston to attend the Berklee School of music in the early 60's while still in his teens. Soon after, he moved to New York to play jazz and five years later he participated in the first American performance by a jazz group in Moscow. In 1970, Jarrett joined the Miles Davis group and then after one year, formed his own quartet. In an era when most other jazz musicians were playing electric, Jarrett remained acoustic.
