Show Ctty Crews Avert Disaster Mudslide ThreatensJB.C. Home The mudslide that threatened threaten-ed the David Sundquist residence at 409 Woodside May 6 has stopped moving and the hundred-year-old house, for the meantime, appears to be out of danger. City crews worked most of the morning last Friday to keep the water saturated hillside from crushing the rear of the small fr.ame house and by noon had the' potential disaster under control. con-trol. Mrs. Edna Sundquist, who1 was home alone that morri- ing, called for assistance when her kitchen wall began . to buckle under the pressure of the moving hillside. . "I heard the sound of cracking wood and I could see the kitchen wall moving. I though we's lose the whole house," she said. David Sundquist called the efforts of the city crew "super" and added, "If the city crew hadn't responded as quickly as they did, I'm sure there would have been much more damage to the house." Sundquist said he will have to wait until the hillside dries out before he can assess the damage caused by the slide. "Right now there's so much . dirt back there I can't tell what it's done to the house," he said. Assistant Public Works Department Director Jim Holcomb said it's a matter of policy for the city crew to respond to emergency situations situa-tions involving private property pro-perty and added the city has no intention of billing the Sundquists for the work. "We were all glad we could be of some help," he said. If current wet weather trends persist, Holcomb admits ad-mits there is the potential for more damage to other homes and buildings that are vulnerable to the unstable hillsides around Park City. He. said he is particularly concerned about one home in the Northstar Subdivision on Lowell Avenue where earth slippage has been encountered encount-ered despite intricate railroad rail-road tie retaining walls. Holcomb added some earth movement has also been detected along the road that connects Deer Valley with Silver Lake. That road, however, has yet to be accepted by the city and it would be the responsibility of the developer, not the city, to repair any damage. WS S I ' - J . :;Ss;: t ;WS "wi, .
