Show American Indians, women to be themes of Kimball exhibit The Kimball Art Center will present an exhibit of photographs by Howard T. Rainer in the Main Gallery and oils by Jeanne L Clarke in the Lower Gallery beginning April '7. Titled "Earth Maker's Children," the photo-poetic American Indian exhibit was created by Rainer, who is a Taos-Pueblo Creek Indian from Taos, New Mexico, Rainer is assistant assist-ant director of the American Indian Services and Research Center at Brigham Young University. Rainer's show is a candid documentation of contemporary Indian In-dian life that captures people caught in a turbulent transition. "I want Earth Maker's Children to be a l.Tctipf? tril-mtp tn hp American Indian as I see and feel it," said Rainer. Clarke reflects her personal experiences as a woman in her large, colorful oil paintings. Of her series depicting women, Clarke says, "I am using the traditional odalisaue, but instead of distorting her, I try to express her multi-dimensionality as a competent and intelligent human being. " I am influenced by the color-field artists and have used their concepts to reflect the role of women in our society." A free reception for the artists will be held at the Kimball on Sunday from 3 to 5 p.m. The public is invited. |
