When asked by THE RECORD REC-ORD to comment on Park City's present City Manager Mana-ger form of Government opposed op-posed to a strong Mayor form, Leon said that he liked the Manager form better. With a City Manager actually act-ually running much of the City, you have a man who is a professional at managing mana-ging a local municipality--that is what he is trained to do. Thereby I feel that that person, through his training, is more capable of making the decisions which will effect the actual operation of the City than a man who lacks professional training. Leon's only complaint towards to-wards the present City Council, Coun-cil, which he is a part, is that often personal animosities animos-ities between members of. the Council, have become paramount to the actual matter mat-ter at hand and have inter- . fered with effective decision and policy making. Leon is the secor political pol-itical canidate to pubiically announce intentions of seeking seek-ing office in Park City's October Primary and November Nov-ember Elections. Shelia Iv-ers Iv-ers announced two weeks ago that she will actively seek ' election to the office of City Council. Others however have apparently ap-parently picked up petitions for candidacy at City Hall but have not made their intentions in-tentions public yet. Leon Uriarte Councilman, Leon Uriarte announced this week that he will throw in his hat and begin actively campaigning for the office of Mayor of Park City. John Price has indicated that he will not seek re-election this year. Price, who's term would normally not expire for another an-other two years was only reinstated for a year after his resignation last summer. Leon seems to posses the qualifications for the job, in that he was a member of the first Park City Planning Plan-ning Commission for five years and played a significant signif-icant role in drafting the first master plan. Apart from his duties as Planning Commissioner, Leon has been a member of the City Council for eight years-serving years-serving two terms. "I think I have the nec-cessary nec-cessary experience for the job due to my previous activity act-ivity in local government, responded the Councilman when asked why he was seeking seek-ing office, Also I feel that I have a genuine interest in Park City and its well being and that my actions on the City Council will reflect that I have always voted accordingly." accord-ingly." Leon Uriarte, who was born and raised in Park City, told the RECORD that he had not developed a political polit-ical platform to date and declined to comment oncer-tain oncer-tain political matters, saying "These issues will be brought to the surface when the campaigne gets into full swing." Leon did however comment com-ment on something that has been bothering him about Park City for quite some time. That being the seeming seem-ing lack of total community cooperation. "Every one in Park City has the same goal in mind when it comes to the future of Park City commented com-mented Mr. Uriarte, That is to see the town grow into a good, healthy strongcom-munity. strongcom-munity. I can't see why, if everyone wants the same thing, we all can't get together to-gether and work towards that mutual interest." Leon says he likes the new political system inParkCity "I think that changing from the political convention method of candidate selection select-ion to a direct primary will give more people a chance to get involved in local government gov-ernment and will give the community a better selection select-ion of candidates from which to choose when it comes time to cast their ballots." As far as the responsibilities responsib-ilities of the office of Mayor are concerned, both now and in the future, Leon feels that the Mayor should act as an arbitrator and instigator-prompting instigator-prompting the City Council to take an active interest in the problems of the community com-munity and their solutions.
