Show Editorial Keep Park Beautiful It was with great pleasure that we learned of Park West's current efforts to seed their ski runs. They have apparently been actively spreading pasture seed over their barren ski runs throughout this week. The scars on the mountain at Park West have been an eye sore to the community and the world and an ecological hazard since the ski runs were first cut through the aspen and pines eight years ago. Tragically, their efforts were not implemented eight years ago, as much of the top soil which once supported lush vegetation in the area has now lieen washed awav. However, later is much better than never and botanists maintain that plant life can be made to flourish on the rnrkipczf nf tprrain- While we are. on the subject of ecology and the preservation pres-ervation of our natural environment, it seems natural to wonder if the Ontario mine dump, located adjacent the road as one travels between Park City and Brighton, could also be made to support vegetation thereby eliminating yet another an-other eye sore. Environmentalists believe that the Ontario mine dump is a perfect habitat for wild roses to flourish as well as other plant life traditionally inherent in rocky soil. The matterof replantingcertainspeciesof flora in areas where the original plant life has been, for one reason or another, stripped away by the efforts of man, is not only a matter of eliminating an eye sore but also a very necessary step that must be taken to preserve what is becoming tragically unbalanced balance of nature. When plant life is stripped away from apiece of ground where it once flourished, it exposes the underlying soil to erosion. Without the plant roots to hold the soil in place, it rapidly washes away polluting streams with silt and endangering en-dangering fish species. Also once the top soil is washed away, water, which was normally absorbed by the soil, rushes freely down the mountainside creating an unbalanced run off and eventually effecting the water table itself. We would like to encourage everyone in Park City to take an active interest in the re-seeding of terrain which has been disturbed by development for the sake of preserving the natural beauty which flourishes so abundantly in the area and especially for the sake of preserving a natural balance of nature which will allow the beauty of Park City to continue to flourish. |
