Show U.S. Ski Team Loses Two Coaches Following the close of another successful racing season in which the United States Ski Team was third overall in the Nation's Cup, the Alpine team will be short of the services of both its Head Men's and Women's Coaches at the close of the season. Head Women's Coach Hermann Her-mann Goellner will not be returning while Head Men's Coach. Harald Schoenhaar. will retire his position as previously announced. Schoenhaar. who has been considering retirement for the past two seasons, first joined the Alpine Team in 1974 as special men's coach and has been head men's coach since 1976. He began his coaching career in West Germany in 1966 and was their head men's coach from 1969-1973. Schoenhaar Scho-enhaar recently completed his second Olympics with the U.S. Team and the success of the men's team at Lake Placid, where Phil won the silver medal, was due largely to his efforts. Alpine Director. Bill Marolt. said. "Harald's experience and ability to work with people has given the U.S. Ski Team some of its best results ever and we are presently negotiating negotiat-ing with him to continue with the team in another capacity." ' Goellner. 35, who joined the Alpine Team as Head Women's Wo-men's Coach in April, 1978, had been Director of Racing' at Stratton Mountain School since its inception in 1972. A former member of the Aust-! rian B Team, he had been Head Ski Coach at Killington, Vermont, from 1965-68. j Both are wished the great- j est success in their new endeavors. The Alpine National Team will be officially named at the Board of Trustee's meeting in the middle of June while the Nordic National Team will be announced by the first of May. |
