A seemingly more confident confi-dent Park City Miner Foot-ball Foot-ball Club, under the leader-. leader-. ship of Senior Quarterback, . Jim Hfgham; rolled over the Altamont Longhorns last Friday evening, posting an r impressive 23 to 0 victory in the opening game of preseason pre-season play. Playing under the lights in the chilly Duchesne County night, the Miners' strong defensive line consistently frustrated the Longhorns in their attempts to advance the ball down field. Nothing could be taken away from the Longhorn defensive players either during the first half, as they held the Miners scoreless until late in the second period. Then, with less than a minute remaining in the first half. Halfback Mark Uriarte broke through a hole in the Longhorn line, running the ' ball four yards over the goal line for the Miners' first score of the game. Uriarte was next called on to run a two-point conversion attempt, at-tempt, and again, the agile Senior slipped through the Jl in i TT inn . . .. j wmmmm-- . "Vnn m i i -. Coach Bob Burns defensive line making the score 8 to nothing for the Miners at the end of the first half. Third quarter play constituted consti-tuted a successful defensive battle waged by both clubs, with neither managing to muster up the defensive strength to put any points on the scoreboard. However, early in the fourth period, Senior Halfback Half-back Kip Foote broke away at the sixteen to score a second touchdown for the Miners. The conversion at-temp at-temp unfortunately failed, but the Miners could breath easier, out in front 14 to 0, as the clock ticked away in their favor. An additional two points later widened Park City's lead, -when fine Defense Back. Marty Cowin tackled the Longhorn Quarterback in the end zone for a safety . Once again in possessiosn, with only one minute remaining remain-ing in the game, Sophomore Quarterback Steve Toly took off from the fifty advancing the ball to the thirty where a tough Longhorn tackle forced him to caugh up the ball. Fortupately Toly's fumble was recovered by Miner Split End Bret Wright, who ran the ball thirty yards to score Park City's third touchdown. Ahead 22 to 0, Coach Bob Burns brought in Quarterback Quarter-back Jim Higham to attempt a one-point kick rather than a two-point run after the touchdown: Higham's kick was dead on center putting the Miners in front 23-0 at the end of their first game of the season. After the game Coach Burns admitted that i cautiously cau-tiously he had not anticipated anticipat-ed an easy victor' over the Altamont club and added that he was very pleased with the way his Miners had played. Our defensive line and back play was good and consistent," he said.' . 'Offensively, 'Of-fensively, we still lack some consistency in our attack, but the team as a whole has shown much improvement over last year." Pre-season play continues this Friday, September 7, when the 4 Miners will meet Duchesne at Park City turf beginning at 4:00pm. - The following Friday7, September 14, the Miners will celebrate Homecoming with a pre-season bout against East Carbon, ; .
