Show Martinez Mcliardsoii Mm Tradition Labor Day Events With the mines soon to re-open, this years Miners Day celebration returned to it's original roots and provided pro-vided the residents of Park City with a fun filled day. Grand Marshall of the day was Ontario Mine's Dick Sorensen who also organized the popular Mucking and Drilling Contest. From the fire department to Schick Sunn Classics everybody got into the mat Wendy Mills Gown Costume: 1st: Jeremy Bensch 2nd: Jenny Bensch 3rd: Marci Kummer, Charles Johnson and Chriss Winn Decorated Vehicles, etc.: 1st: Becky Hall 2nd: Michelle and Ashley Sloan and their dog Honorable Mention: Holly Hunter Other Parade Awards Decorated Car or Individual Float: 1st: Kilby Family Float 2nd: 1910 Ford (Utah Horseless Carriage Club) 3rd: 1909 Buick (Utah Horseless Horse-less Carriage Club) Horses: 1st Prize and Sweeping all Awards in this Category: 'The Night Riders" Horse-Drawn Vehicles: 1st: Lower Silver Creek String Band (trophy) 2nd: The Fire Hose Cart (plaque). The judges decided to place the cart under the "Horse-Drawn" category as a ongue in cheek" joke. Many long time residents claimed this was the finest in years. Entrants varied from Rachel Dreyfuss dressed as , a large piece of silver with her dog in overalls and a hard hat, to the pink confection of a float for the Miss Miners Day queens from First Security Bank. There were clowns and candy and horses and the terrific Post Office Marching Band from Salt Lake. All day activities at City Park were well attended. Music was provided by the Lower Silver Creek String Band, the Post Office Band, Park City's own country rock group "Alias" and finally by the Utah Opera Company. There were childrens races and egg tosses, and that favorite, the sawdust scramble. Clearly the highlight of the afternoon was the mucking and drilling contests sponsored spon-sored by the. new mine people at Noranda. Dick Sorenson made all arrangements arrange-ments for this years event which drew 10 contestants for; the drilling; and 10-contestants 10-contestants for the mucking. Rich Martinez placed first in the drilling with a time of one minute three seconds. Mike Alvey was only seconds away with a time of one minute x v ii,. W Vj s 'vty hmWV .... Master Driller Rich. Martinez . and twelve seconds and Kenny was close behind to place third with a time of one minute eighteen and one half seconds. Kenny then moved on to capture the first place money for the mucking contest with his time of one minute fifteen seconds. Second Sec-ond place winner was Rich Martinez with a time of one minute seventeen-seconds. Third place was won . - by Dick Sorenson clocking in at one minute eighteen and a half seconds. While the rest of the country had to be content to share Labor Day, Park City - once again proved it's in a class by itself; Miners Day ; has always been the favorite celebration of Parkites. LABOR DAY Parade Prize Winners Children: Children received ribbons in each category and Alpine Slide tickets in varying amounts for first, second and third. Special costumes received re-ceived silver dollars. A , special plaque was given to Glade Peterson, Director, Utah Opera Company, and , his horsePopeye.
