Show Fluoride Program Adopted For Schools The Winters Middle School Council and Marsac School Community Council met last Thursday and decided to implement imple-ment a fluoride mouth rinsing program at both schools. Council members heard from Molly McCulloch, a state health department depart-ment official, concerning the new fluoride program and how to initiate it in the elementary and middle schools. Mrs. McCullock explained that with the use of fluoride mouth rinsing, children can reduce tooth decay by as much as 40 percent by using the liquid form, as opposed to tablets. Letters are being sent out to all parents of students at the schools explaining the program. There will also be a slip to sign if parents want to participate in the fluoride program, which is optional. The cost of the fluoride use is 50 cents per student a year. Council members will meet again to decide use of the liquid fluoride and at what hour to administer the fluoride to the children. It will be administered once a week by parent volunteers. The fluoride is not swallowed, but simply swished and released into a small paper cup. It was explained that if children are already using fluoride tablets, the liquid will serve to benefit him or her even more. After the fluoride is ordered, the program could start around December 1. Over half the schools in Utah are presently using the fluoride rinsing program. |
