Show EDITORIAL Small Price To Pay Although most of the attention in the closing days of the campaign before Tuesday's municipal election has been devoted to the race for two open city council seats, it should not be forgotten that Park City voters will also decide whether to approve a quarter percent transportation sales tax. Supporting a tax increase is generally an unpopular stand to take, but we feel this tax would clearly benefit the residents of Park City. The most frequently heard complaint about the city's free bus system has been that it doesn't adequately serve local residents. A large. part of the reason for poor service has been the lack of adequate funding for the system. This tax would provide the necessary funds to both expand and improve the system. In terms of the local' business, the bus has proved valuable in bringing skiers to the Main Street business district. Without a regular source of income, the system has been forced to rely on contributions, but generosity is not always the most efficient way to operate a public service. A quarter percent tax amounts to only one cent on a four dollar purchase. Since approximately 65 percent of sales in Park City are made by out of town visitors, local residents would pay only a small portion of the cost of a service everyone can use. We feel it is a small price to pay for a valuable service. |
