SOMETIMES IN THE realm of competitive athletics a team has to go to great lengths to overcome a series of disappointing dis-appointing setbacks. That's just vhat Park City Rugby Football Club did this past weekend; going go-ing 400 miles to Aspen, Colorado Colo-rado to gain a tie, 4-4 with the Aspen B Rugby Squad. And a tie doesn't sound like much, but when you've lost twelve in a row, and you've never even scored on the Aspen field, that tie and those 4 points are mighty welcome wel-come tidings. The 4-4 tie came on Saturday, Satur-day, following the confrontation of the Aspen Gentlemen and the Salt Lake Polynesians, who also made the long trip. That game ended in a tie also, 10-10, as the rugged Tongan squad proved they could play rubgy in anybody's any-body's class. On Sunday, the Parkites fell to the mighty Aspen A's, the premier side in Colorado, 14-4. Park City had it's moments in that game too, showing Aspen that Utah Rugby and Park City rugby have come a long way. Last year the scores of the games in Aspen were 3-0, 20-0, and 24-0, all against Park City NOW BACK HOME, the Park City Club will have a full schedule over the July 4th weekend, playing the Polynesians Poly-nesians Saturday in Salt Lake and hosting them on Tuesday, July 4, at 2:30 p.m., immediately immed-iately following the parade. This point in the season brought a vote of thanks to all the people who have helped us the Park Ruggers, so far this year. The Park City Parks Committee received a special thanks for the use of the buildings, build-ings, grounds, and most of all the fine new field at the Community Com-munity Park. The three fellows who visited Park City for the games over Memorial Day weekend said there isn't such a good field in all of the state of Texas and that includes the Astrodome. Clem Hansen and Ray Beck-sted Beck-sted were commended for, a great job. 'Hats Off" to all the folks at the Kimberly 7 and the New Park Hotel for the use of their kitchen to prepare for the Memorial Day Barbecue was given. The Ruggers also wished to mention that Ernie Scow and George Polychronis were very helpful on short notice that weekend. And the team will always be grateful to the Park City Softballers, those Sul-tanesses Sul-tanesses of Sweetness, the best chicken flippers in the land, who personally labored countless count-less hours over hot coals at the barbecue. Has everyone seen the Challenge Chal-lenge Cup poster for this year? Next time you do, remember the talent and effort of Dag-uereotype Dag-uereotype of Park City, Victor Bickmore, and Paragon Press of Salt Lake made it possible to go 'First Class'. Andfinally, thanks was extended to Rick |
