Show A SPECIAL LECTURE TO MEN A large congregation assembled at St. Joseph's church last night to attend at-tend the mission services. At. 7:1.') He dealt particularly par-ticularly uon the reverence paid to the crucifix and images of the saints, emphasizing the faQ that Catholics never adore the cruclllx or sacred images nor pray to them, but merely honor them-as a good citizen honors the statue of a national hero, or a devoted child honors the portrait of a dear parent, and prays to the saint whom the picture or statue represents He declared that ns the saints are the beloved friend of Cod.. Catholics believe be-lieve that their prayers are more acceptable to Cod than our own, and therefore their intercession is sought when Catholics hope for Divine favors. fa-vors. At S o'clock Father Cantwell preached preach-ed the important sermon of the evening even-ing on the solemn sunject of "Death " He reminded his hearers that death is most certain, because none can escape es-cape it, and at the same time most uncertnln, because no one can foretell when, where or how ho will die. In simple, graphic language, he pointed out the folly of deferring till old age the preparation for death, declaring that Holy Scripture and experience both teach us most convincingly that death Is tho echo of life as one lhes, so shall he die, He exhorted his hearers, therefore, in the words of the Divine Savior, to be always prepared for death, since they know not the day nor the hour when they shall be summoned forth to give an account of their life to the eternal Judge. This morning, at the two mission masses at C and S.10 o'clock, the sermons ser-mons were on the Catholic practice of praying for the dead. The missionaries mission-aries explained the. reasonableness ct the doctrine of Purgatory and urged the faithful to remember their dear departed in their prayers. This afternoon at 3 o'clock, thero wio a special lecture for the married women of the congregation. This evening at 7.30. the regular services will take place In the church for the young men and the married men and women; but the young ladles w'll assemble as-semble In the church-hall to listen to a special k-cture. A special lecturo will be given the married men tomorrow night and to the young men of the parish on Friday night. |
