Show NEGRO BURNED AT THE STAKE BEL-TON, Tx., July 22 Henry Gentry, a negro 18 years old, paid the penalty of his crime of murder and presumably Intended assault, at the stake tonight while two others, a brother and a companlou, charged with complicity missed a like fato ouly through the pleadings of Sheriff Sher-iff Burke and several citizens. Early today the negro attempted to force an entrance into the home of Mrs. Lamb, a "widow, but was frlghteued away by a ehot by the woman's daughter. Several hours later, while Gentry was being searched search-ed for by a posse headed by Constable Con-stable James Mitchell, Gentry filing from ambush, killed the posse loader. The mob surrounded the fugitive and as it closed In, Gentry made a dash for liberty, but was shot and crippled. He was dragged behind an automobile to ISelton, where several thousand frenzied men and boys awaited his coming. As the public square was reached the rope was tossed to a man ou horseback and the negro was dragged about the square to the pyre. The applying of the torch was the work of a moment and while several hundred shots were fired into his body, the already dylog negro was incinerated. A dash was then made for the city prison, where were the two others charged with aiding Gentry in the killing of MitchelL Pleading and making a show of force by the shei-1 shei-1 IT, however, stopped the mob. |
