Show HEART DISEASE ON INCREASE. ' - A good deal of alarm is being expressed at the way heart disease is carrying people off in this country, as shown by the census returns. re-turns. Lost year 65,000 persons died from this cause. Pneumonia took off 82,000 people and tuberculosis 81,000. Heart disease now shows up as the third most frequent cause of death, and it is gaining on the others. Fast living is the cause of this, in the opinion of the authorities on health. Not only the people in the cities but those in the rural districts dis-tricts and everywhere are eating heavier and richer food and are drinking too many stimulants not only liquors but tea, coffee, etc. With it all they are working lfard, always on the go, and altogether overtaxing their vitality. The result is a rapid increase in cases of acute indigestion and the like, which can be laid to the overwork placed on the heart. Plainer diet, simpler habits and more life in the open air are the things urged for the warding off of such ailments. |
