Show WHEN A WITCH APPEARED IN OGDEN. t So Ogdcn, years ago, was made to shudder by the presence of a "witch" at the corner of Twenty-fifth street and Lincoln avenue! Years ago there were witches in Europe and even in the eastern east-ern part of the United States. The darkest pages in our history bear on witchcraft and the putting to death of people accused of being possessed of evil spirits. It is well for us that the dark days of blind superstition have passed that witches have gone out of our lives. What a state of mind, the creating of witches; the making of miserable people more miserable by fixing upon them a suspicion; finally mobbing and murdering the objects of false accusation I Even Shakespeare, great philosopher and keen judge of human nature as he was, countenanced witchcraft and wrote an indictment into his master pieces of literature. When people believed in ghosts and looked for the presence of devils in human flesh, they did outrageous things in the casting out of evil spirits. One great advancement, brought about by our present civilization, civiliza-tion, is the elimination of all that old terrorism. Of course there was never an Ogden witch, although some such creature might have escaped from Salt Lake and temporarily located lo-cated here, later vanishing and appearing reincarnate in the form of a Salt Lake prognosticate of the abandonment of the cut-off. The only evil spirits to be feared today are artful men and women who are devoid of spirit and are possessed of the machination machina-tion of the world worldly. |
