Show FATHER ENGLISH DISCOVERER OF CHARLES A. COMISKEY Chicago. Jan. 14. "Columbus discovered dis-covered America, but I discovered Comiskey."' That was the greeting extended to Chailes A, Comiskey. owner if the Chicago American league club, and Han Johnson, president of the American Ameri-can league, on their recent arrival at t'xcelsior Springs', Mo. The greeting was from Father J. E. English, ' a priest of the Omaha diocese, who was a guest at tho health resort. Pressed for an explanation. It transpired that Father English and Mr. Comlnskey in 1874 were students stu-dents at the Christian Brothers' college col-lege at Prairie Du Chlen, Wis. English Eng-lish was a senior and manager of the college ball team. Comiskey, son of a Chicago alderman, was an under classman. The college team was contemplating contemplat-ing a trip and was short on pitchers. One day Manager English was attracted at-tracted by the pitching of the Chicago Chica-go lad, who delivered a slow curve ball, a puzzler In those days. It was the first curve ball ever seen on tho college grounds. The manager decided de-cided to take Comiskey on the trip, much to the delight of the young pitcher. |
