Postofllco authorities au-thorities of Chicago and New York ary tryiog to get to tho bottom of what seems to be a scheme to swindle swin-dle diamond merchants of Now York through. a series of forged letters. The forged communications addressed to a New York man who cannot bo found, are written on stationery copied after lhat of W. A. Burrows. 10? Stato street, and bear his forged signature. Three of the letters addressed ad-dressed "Charles Donobul, Victoria Hotel, New York City." and not de-del de-del ivercd there, were returned to Mr. Burrows, who handed them to tho poKtofUce authorities. Socret service men believe the person per-son for whom the letters were intended in-tended may be under arrest and fo unable to call for them. As a consequence, conse-quence, they wero sent by tbo hotel to Mr. Burrows, whose name appears ap-pears on the envelopes. "Apparently the writer of the letters let-ters and the man to whom they were rent were working out a scheme to defraud diamond dealers in New ' York." said Mr. Burrows last evening even-ing "Three letters came to roe. In the first, the writer said he had 'about denned tip his s'ock of white goods. That is a superior grade of diamonds free from yellow tints. "He also wrote that ho uas annoyed an-noyed because a certain package from Amsterdam had not arrived. The signature to the letter is a clever forgery for-gery of my own.' 1 The final letter, -which followed a second telling tho New York man to purchase thirty to forty perfect hite diamonds ranging in weight from one to three carats, contained six certified chocks drawn on the Hibernian Hi-bernian Banking association, which have been pronounced forgeries. |
