Show STRIKE IS HAPPILY JNDED Amxable Seltlement Is Due to Piitsburg's -Mayor Pittsburg, June 29. Cars were run out of the various barns of the Pittsburg Pitts-burg Railway company as usual, this morning, and' soon every division was In full operation. .The ending of the fltreet car strike was as sudden as Us beginning. Excepting one point which will be arbitrated Later, the differences wera adjusted at - tfnt -conference - held in-Mayor in-Mayor Magee's office last night. This point involves a motorman, discharged discharg-ed on charges of drinking when in uniform. He will be reinstated pending pend-ing arbitration. For two whole days, between pouring pour-ing rain and a sun which made wet clothes steam, the residents of the "Smoky City" struggled the best way they could against poor shuttle steam trains and poorer dray carry-alls.' The roor man walked, the well-to-do walked walk-ed and the affluent walked. There was no alternative. The serious side of the two days' traffic disturbance lies In the loss t5 the car companies in tariff fares, the loss of wages to the Union men, the loss of department store trade, salaries sal-aries for extra police and the general demoralization of business conditions throughout the city. It has been estimated es-timated that Monday alone brought the total cost of the strike close to $250,000. The agreement made and signed by the Pittsburg Railway company and the Amalgamated Association of Street and Electric Railway employes last night, it Is predicted, will forestall fore-stall any traffic strikes in Pittsburg for years to come. She Union men claim lhoy have gained their points, while the car company people are just, as strong In tho assertion that they stood firm. Mayor Magce, however, how-ever, smilingly stated he believed all trouble between the car company and its men had for once and all been done away with. On every hand Is heard commendation commenda-tion lor tho efforts of Greater Pittsburg's Pitts-burg's mayor, William A, Magee. Through his efforts the strike was amicably settled. |
