Show chiefly by Mr. Plnsroe and a number of ladles who were interested In the project. Considerable discussion was entered into regarding the matter, during which no particular objection to the granting of the franchise was shown. The Harriman interests represented that they had no objection to the granting of the franchise ir there could be a provision injtcted into the franchise that the contemplated 6treet car line over the avenue be contined strictly to urban purposes. They thought tho Rapid Transit people should not be given the right to operate the extension for interurban purposes or bo given a right of way over Wall avenue, which runs parallel to the Union Pacific road, which would enable them to connect with an incoming in-coming road that would be thrown into competition with the trunk line now in operation by the Union Pacific company. com-pany. Mr. Hollingsworth slated that Parley Williams, the attorney for the Harriman Interests and who was pro-vented pro-vented from attending the meeting on account of sickness, would write a chuse covering the stated objection lo the franchise which the Union Pacific Pa-cific company would ask to be inserted in-serted in tho proposed franchise. The consensus ot opinion largely revailed that the franchise asked ror should be granted, but little attention being given to the proposition made by the Harriman people. The residents resi-dents of the southwestern part of the city were particularly solicitous that the franchise be granted so as to fur-r.iEh fur-r.iEh them street car facilities into the bueiness center of the city. They contended con-tended that they had built sidewalks, opened streets and paid for connections connec-tions established by the council and that, in turn, they now wanted street car connections. j COMMITTEE OF THE WHOLE GRANTING OF FRANCHISE TO O. He also stated that the com- I pany had already ordered material for 1 the building of something like fifteen miles of street car line, which would extend the services to Thirty-third street on Wall avenue, a block and a j half farther east from the present ter- j minus on Twenty-fifth street, into the rural districts embracing Plain City j and other northern settlements and , through Ogden canyon, and that other j extensions In the city would be made j as soon as the patronage to the road i would Justify the expenditure for such j extensions. I All present were given a free voice, j after which the committee resolved It- self into special session to consider j the matter. While nothing particular- j ly definite could be learned as to what the action of the committee was, it is quite safe to say that when the city ( council meets next Monday night the j committee will recommend that the franchise be granted In tQe form that it is now written. |
