Show prompter, the hypnotic Svengall, has the play going public of this country raved over a piece of this nature; no4-wlll no4-wlll it for many -years, to come.. Ab in "Faust" and other pieces which savor of a weird, unnatural power of cne person over another, whether he be man or devil, the human mind finds something Irreslstably fascinating. fascinat-ing. in few words, "Tho Devil" deals with the separation of two lovers by poverty and the subsequent marriage of the woman to a man of wealth. The discarded lover, who Is an artist, rises afterward to fame and position, and In that capacity Is engaged by the husband hus-band to paint the portrait of his wife. Thus tho former lovers are again thrown together and under the doml-rating doml-rating power of "The Devil." and despite de-spite their resistance, the old lovo Is rekindled with the usual results of a broken homo and a grief stricken husband to mourn his loss. The moral to be drawn Is left bv the clever author to the discretion of the audience, the idea being conveyed that In the human mind alone lurks the demon "Temptation," and that In that mind alone can his promptings be overcome. Mr. Wallace gave an excellent Interpretation In-terpretation of tho difficult role, in fact, from an artistic point of view, he succeeds better in the part than in any of the many roles he has, essayed es-sayed in past seasons. He uses i makeup considerably heavier than Borne who have played tho part, but does not use the devilish characteristics characteris-tics featured strongly by Edwin Stevens Ste-vens and others. Mr. Wallace was last seen In tho title role of the Gillette Gil-lette version of "Sherlock Holmea," and has starred with Viola Allen In "The Christian " Miss Elizabeth Murray as Olga, the wife, pleased the majority of tho audience au-dience and did some very good work ut times. She has, however, been seen to better advantage in other roles, particularly that of Madge Larrabee in "Sherlock Holmes." Last evening's performance was the last by this company for tho season. "THE DEVIL" Drew Good Sized House at the Grand Lett Evening. ."The Devil." with Ramsey Wallace In the title role, drew a good tiz:d house at tho Grand last evening and proved a very creditable performance of this much-talked-of comedy dram?..
