Show Home of the Fez. Fez, where Mulai Hafid is reportod to have been making hay of clec'rlo light fittings and everything else that has the taint of Europe, has given its namo to the familiar Turkish equivalent equiva-lent of a hat. At one time all fezzes came from Foz, it being supposed that only thore could tho exact crimson crim-son dye required be obtained. It is curious that the name of an agrlcultu- j ral implement has thus been appropriated appropri-ated by headgear; for fez, or fas, means in Arabic a hoo. The favorite story is that Idrees II., the founder of the city, turned the first uod with one, remarking: "Hero I plant my fae." Another version is that an older city called Saf ence stood there and ldre3 simply transposed its nume. |
