The spontaneous action throughout the country to succor suc-cor the distress of Italy has assumed the character of an imposing national movement. Reports from all sections i of the country snow titles, Individuals, ! societies, religions bodies, Red Cross organizations, private corporations, commercial sbndies and all branches of public and private life joining in this humane and practical expression of the American people in behalf of tho af-1 af-1 dieted nation. Already over $500,000 in cash is on hand and most of this sum has been cabled or is on its way, to Italy, Governors of states and mayors of cities issued appeals, and a message from the president to congress Is expected ex-pected when that hody reassembles on Monday. The New York total is upward up-ward of $160,000; Boston is nearins $30,000: Chicago is raising $100,000; San Francisco already has contributed contribut-ed $76,700; St. luis exceeds $25,000. The Canadian government has appropriated appro-priated $100,000 and tho .city of Toronto Toron-to has added $5,000. About $250,000 worth of supplies are already on tho way to Italy on tho United States supply sup-ply ship Celtic.
