Show HOUSE VOTES AGAINST PAYING PRESIDENT $100,000 Washington, Feb. 24. The house today to-day rejected the senate provision increasing in-creasing to $100,000 the salary of the President. In a lively debate In the house on the conference report on the executive, execu-tive, legislative and judicial approprla- tion bill, Mc8sr6. Underwood, of Alabama, Ala-bama, and Clark, of Missouri, criticised criticis-ed the senate Increase in appropriations, appropria-tions, and especially In reference to salaries. Messrs. Bingham, of Pennsylvania, Glllctt, of Massachusetts, and' Livings-' tone, of Georgia, the house confercs. strenuously defendod their report, which Insofar as there was no disagreement, dis-agreement, was adopted. When the discussion turned on the increaaed salaries of the President, i vice-president, speaker of the house ' and judges, about which tho conferes could not agree. Mr. Clark renewed his criticisms, declaring that. Instead of 550.000. the President actually received receiv-ed $291,000 per annum. The vote on each increase was taken separately. By 57 to 103. the house refused to accept tb senate amendment amend-ment increasing the speaker's salary. |
