Chicago, Feb. 24. Dr. M. V. O Shca, ' of the University of "Wisconsin, told the Illinois Congress of Mothers that there is at present too much refinement refine-ment in the public schools of the country. "The boys," he said, "suffer for the lack of something rough. The American Ameri-can boy should have coercion and not t so much persuasion. Sentiment thould not dominate judgment. "A boy ought to be made to do things because he knows there Is force behind the command. "There is far too much delicacy In ; the present method of treating the bad boy In the public school. The best thing that can bo done Is to thrash him. "Women teachors," said Dr. O'Shca, "have a tendency to cause too much effenlnacy ajong boys. There is not enough of the rough and tumblo spirit in the school boy's life today. There fchould be more muscularity and less of the softening Influences.' "I disagree with the professor." said Francis Blair. "The presence of women wom-en In schools has a refining Influence on the American boy. A boy is a boy and always will retain hia natural proclivities. pro-clivities. As superintendent of tho schools of Illinois. I have had ample opportunity to study the question, and I must, say the moro I scrutinize It, the more convinced am I of tho respect a woman teacher Inspires in her male pupil, and the wholesome influences ahc diffuses." |
