Show I BUYING CHECKS I ! REACTION TREND i (Mellon's Announcement of No New U. S. Taxes Behind Be-hind Advance NEW YORK, Dec 6 Tho reactionary reaction-ary tendency of stock prices was checked late today by a strong buying movement which followed publication of Secretary of tho Treasury Mellon's report that no new federal taxes were contemplated next year. Motor .shares were conspicuously Btronpr. Railroad stocks labored behind the rest of the, list. Sales approximated 750.000 hares. The struggle for control between opposing speculative forces Imparted aj decidedly Irregular trend to prices atj the opening of today's stock market, th main tendency being downward Ralls and oils were In rather free supply sup-ply and there wa.s sporadic selling of food and motor accessory shares. Tho only group to show signs of strength was tho copper shares, which were bid up on reports of improvement In the industry, as reflected In thoTcsump-tion thoTcsump-tion of dividends by Kennlcott Cop-, Cop-, per. Losses of a point or more, wore registered in the early dealings by t,unn e. Vf-rrVnve5tern Union I'll- Iclflc and Northern Pacific, oils suffered suf-fered hotter resistance. California Petroleum Pe-troleum dropping a point and the others oth-ers fractionally. Continental Can was pushed up ono point to a new high record and then droppodb aok two. Utah Copper improved 1 li and Cerro do Pasco and Kenecott fractionally. Foreign exchanges were firm. Early weakness of tho rails caused a general sagging of prices throughout the list. Tho speculative uncertainty rogardlng the continuance of the dividend divi-dend rate for Great Northern preferred pre-ferred was utilized by bear traders as an excuse fo assaults elsewhere, representative repre-sentative shares lacking sufficient support sup-port to withstand tho pressure. Tho quality of the buvlng power at the lower ieeia, however, resulted in some short covering which turned tho course of prices upward again toward noon. Great Northern preferred cancelled can-celled Its early loss and started t" higher ground. Several shares displayed dis-played moderate strength notably MacKay Companies, which was pushed up 2i, and American Can, Standard Oil of New Jersey. General Electric and People's Gas, ill up I to 1 points. Call money opened at 5 per cent. Isolated points of weakness persisted persist-ed in the early afternoon market ! Tidewater Oil dropped 7 polhte K Isey Wheel 6 and Continental Can and United Retail Stores t each, ut the trend otherwise wa uniformly upward up-ward In sympathy with the buoyancy of Studebakcr. which advanced points. In the main iri :, in the; general list recovered to almost a parity par-ity with Tuesday's final figures Conspicuous Con-spicuous strength developed in B Varied assortment of Industrials and peclsJtles. with Beechnut Pa I making a gain of 3 points, Amerl Can 2 and Baldwin, Chandler. Kelly-Springfield Kelly-Springfield Tire and Endicott-John-fon 1. Great Northern preferred sold 1 over Tuesday's close The closing was strong. Prices improved materially In the 'late afternoon dealings, the rapidity of i the rise in certain shares Indicating hurried short covering, while o 1 1 j irere bid up on a resumption of pool operations.
