Show BILLBOARDS ON ROADS OPPOSED i I A. A. A. Receives Complaints Com-plaints Against Highway Defacement j I'roteats against trie defacement of , high Way by unsightly road sin blll-i blll-i boards are being received at niiiiotnl headquarters of the American Auto- mobile aSSOCialton almoat dally. A. -I cording to A. A A. officials, there seems to he great and crying movement move-ment against the use oft hese billboards bill-boards aitionn the membership of the A. A. A. in every parr of the country All sorts of remedies for the abate-, abate-, ment of thls nuisance are suggested in these letters, from tho enact meni of suitable legislation to a refusal on tho part of motorists to purchase any articles o advertised. In addition to the marring of highways high-ways it is pointed out. the billboard ; constitutes an- absolute menace to the motorists by attracting his attention from the road ahead and often causing caus-ing a more or less serious ao idont. "I believe that the rood slKn billboard bill-board should be abolished " said President Oeorrre C T'lehl Of the A. A A "Thene signs serve ris a distinct menace to motorist' . specially spe-cially when they nr. placed ss many of them are. at a sharp curve or a road intersection. A motorist driving alonir the highway and approaching such sharp curve or road intersection W mtfl to see what is a round t hat curve or down the Intersecting road much more than he wants to seo a huge sign advertising "WhOSlkS tires or somebody's patent medicine or chewing chew-ing gum "The da of the billboard and the' need Of such methods of advertising Is past. The class of people who use the highways and to whom such signs presumably appeal are a Class that read the newspapers and magazines. ! and who ore governed largely In their purchases by the- advertisements of i reliable products advertised In a re- i;ahi newspaper or magaslne it would appear to me that the Intelligent Intelli-gent advertiser would soon become aware of this fact and would tran8fer the money spent on billboards which constitute an affront In the eyes of most Intelligent citizens to legitimate newspapers and magazines where such advertising would have weight. "With the general trend of opposition opposi-tion to billboard advertising developing develop-ing over the country, as Is Indicated by letters received at the A. A. A. ' hnodquarters. It can be but a nuestlon ! of time until the American public will ; take things Into its own hands and find some means for the abatement of this nuisance." oo |
