Show " THE CIVIC SULKER There are just a few very peculiar fellows i nevery town. These fellows are in a class by themselves, and the class is small. They are the fellows - who never do anything for the community except live in it, and make their money out of it. They never belong to any civic organizations, never attend any community meetings, never buy tickets for any civic entertainments, never give a nickel to help along any good movement, and usually get up a quarrel with every committee that comes around. Their alibi is that they are naturally modest and shrink from the limelight, lime-light, or that they can't see any use for such things. They are usually the ones who really want to be in the limelight but their thinking apparatus does not work fast enough to allow them to reach the mark. The rtuth of the matter is, they are selfish downright selfish. They want city beauti-fication, beauti-fication, good roads, new buildings, play grounds, more population, a larger circle of trade, but they want the other fellow to do the work. They pull back like clams in their shells, trusting to Providence and the other fellow's efforts that somehow, someway, business conditions will get better and the community take on a new lease of life; and when this happens, they glory in their own selfish achievement over the fact that it has not cost them a cent or an hour's community work. These are "civic sulkers." There is more to this '"undesirable citizen" thing than we sometimes ascribe. If this plain talk gets under your hide, just be broadminded enough to think whether this applies to you. Honestly ask yourself the question, "Am I in a measure a civic sulk'er?" If you are, snap out of it. Come out of your shell, your rut, and be one of the boys. Your business will grow, your pride in your town will make you happier ,and the world will be better for your good resolution backed up by action. |
