Show REFORMS YOU MAY EXPECT WHEN GEORGE M. COHAN BUYS A BASEBALL CLUB CHORUS GIRL SHEPHERD HAS UNIQUE IDEAS ON CONDUCTING PROFITABLE VENTURE IN MAJORS t r - n( - s ( y 5 r y if ' : ' n 'tnOOUU? OH OLrH '-rVvCOACH AIh'T LOCO '-rrtT. FVAvesw. omolfvskt 1 BY GHORGE M. OOBLAN I havs been a baseball fan all ir.v life. Lver since I was a kid I have cherished cher-ished tho idea of owning a big league ball club. I have honestly tried to buy three or four clubs. However, I have never been successful. Some people have said my offers were not real, that x was simply ec-ok-inK aomo publicity, advertising for my theatrical ventures. I believe most people will aroo that I am a pretty itiuth advertised young man. I feel sure they will also a;ree that any publicity I receivod from offering of-fering to buy a. ball club wouldn't have any particular effect on my business status- Some time I may acquire a. major ltaguo ball alub. If 1 ever do I have a few reforms which I intend to Institute. In-stitute. lion I n.BJjriderstand mo, I am not Kolns to offer any playing reforms. Tho brand of baseball that is now being played suits me pretty well. I know a lot of peoplo are going to laugh when thoy read this chatter. I like to make 'em laugh and leave 'ern. that wav. FOR CLliAX UXTFOUMS I am first for clean uniforms. If! thero is anything more disgusting than a baseball uniform that lookaj as if it never was laundrled I would' like to know what It ls. In socond thought I believe a chorus girl In a costume that has seen better days Is even worse. That la ono thing I havo always! been very fussy ubout in my produc-l tlons. Tho costumes must bo kept' cloan and In good condition I have seen some ball players wear undershirts that slmplv reeked with dirt und perspiration. How they can stand such garments next to their skin Is a mystery to me Major league ball clubs male a lot of money . It wouldn't cost very much to havo four sets of uniforms Instead of two. That would enable a team to constantly have a cleAn set of uniforms in reserve. GAME WEEDS MORE ACTION Of course players persplro In the summer and sliding is part of tho pastime. Baseball suits are bound to get aolled. but a change a week! would remeriv much of the objection that I havo to uniforms as worn In J the majors. 1 think tho game could stand more! action. The deaf and dumb coaoher' should be abolished Olve us more coachers like Hughey Jennings Nick Altrock and the late Herman Schacfer. More action, I believe, is the crying cry-ing need of baseball- With due modest I feel that I first put ' pep" In the ohorus of a musical production. Xow ail producers pro-ducers regard "pep" as the basic principle for any good c horus. I would havo players hurry In and out as they change innings Baseball needs more "pep." CAN'T STAND QtTTTER Tho fans don't like to see some player walk to his position Just as If he didn't care whether school kep' or not. Run In and out. I would Inject some dopn Into the slow working pitcher, whoso only, motive In so doing ls to annoy tho batter, affect his power of concentr.i- 1 tlon and thereby lesson his batting 'ability. The great pitchers like Christy Matthewson. Walter Johnson and Grover Cleveland Alexander are all fast workers. 1 have only twis thoughts that bear on the playing end. J would Insist that my manager compel ever pluyer ' run out every hit. I can't forgive the "quitter " A player comos to tho bat only four j or five limes In overy game, so It Isn't , much of a task to insist thai he run out every hit. Fight the opposing players, not the umpire, ls my other suggestion for 1 better baseball. If smo players would uso som of the energy on tho field that they waste on the umpire they would be better ball players. |
