Show GETTING THE RIGHT KIND OF FOOD MUCH has been written about the need of a properly balanced diet for both children and adults. The need of milk, fresh fruits and vegetables vege-tables has been often urged. A certain cer-tain amount of meat Is known to be necessary. How can the average housewife know whether she Is feeding feed-ing her family In the proper proportion? propor-tion? She can't stop to weigh or to calculate the exact number of calories calo-ries In each. She needs some general practical working rule by which to check up her food purchases and to estimate the relative amount of each kind of food she Is giving her family. Volumes have been written by doctors, doc-tors, chemists, dietitians and food experts, ex-perts, but the real need Is something i that will make It possible for the busy I mother to answer the question, "What shall we have for dinner today?" and to be sure that her unswer will give her family the food It needs and In proper quantities and proportions. In a recent book on "Food Products," Prod-ucts," Prof. Henry C. Sherman, the well-known authority on foods, has tried to answer this question, not In terms of food values and calories, but in the very practical terms of dollars and cents. , Nor Is he simply theorizing, theoriz-ing, as he says that the plan has been followed In his own household with marked success. The advantage Is that It is suited to any family, of any number and of any Income. How much money do you pay out each week for footl? It may be five or ten or twenty or fifty tlollurs. No matter. Divide tbls amount into five equal parts, Spend one-tifth for fruits and vegetables, one-fiflb for meat, fish and eggs, one-fifth for milk, one-fifth for breads and cereals, and one-Hfth for ' sugars, futs (such as butter, salad oils, etc.) and miscellaneous miscel-laneous groceries. Such a diet would probably be not only more healthful but also more economical eco-nomical than tbe average, It would provide less meat and more fruits and vegetables. If this seems too mucJi trouble, two simple rules can be followed. These are, spend at least as much for milk as you do for meats of all kinds, and as much for fruits and fresh vegetables vege-tables as you do for either. Check up your bills next month and see how you're running. Try this plan and see how if works J |
