Since 1827, this con-dition lius been known as Bright'! dltteuse. Bright found that, In all cases of III la disease, both the kidneys were affected. They were small and hard, the part of the kidney which does the work of excreting the urine from the hlcKid was much smaller than It should he and the kidney whs lurgely made ' up of tough srnr tissue, showing that the kidneys hud for years been sub-ject to prolonged Irritation. Along with this change In the kid-neys are changes In other organs. ...I'lm' arteries become hard and thick; the heart, which has to force the blood through these stiff and nar-rowed tubes, hits become enlarged, cHpeclully, the left side, which pumps flitt liitud throughout the body.- - This produces a hUh blood pressure. The symptoms cuuscd by this con-dition nre nut (Hidden nnd marked, but come on so slowly as to be hardly noticeable. The peculiar thing about them is that they apparently have nothing to do with the kidneys. A popular belief, largely due to patent medicine advertisements, is unit pain in the hack Is an early symptom of ltrlght's disease. Tbls Is not true. Moxt people who think that they have Krlght's (Unease, have no kidney at all. Many people who do not suspect It, have it, or are In the early stages of It. Kven tin advanced case may be entirely unconscious of it and may possess grout menial and phys-ical ability. It la this very Insidious-nep- s that makes IJrlght's disease such a danger to middle age. How does this disease show ItselfT In a general feeling of poor health. The patient is tired, sleeps poorly, bus frequent headaches and digestive disturbances. The tongue Is coated. The patient baa to get up, sometimes several times a night to empty the bladder. The amount of urine la In-creased and tliere Is constant thirst. Attacks of bronchitis are common and the patient suffers from breathless-ness- , especially after walking briskly or .climbing gtalra. There 1b Often trouble with ttw eyea The skin Is dry j and ) the perspiration senrity. .Sometimes the ankles will swell or the skin under eyes will puff up. These symptoms, especially In men and women of middle age, are danger signals and sliouhi call for an Imme-diate and careful physical examina-tion. Don't wait for them to become worse. Kind out now what the trou-ble Is and how far it has gone. Drastic Action "Can you tlx up tbls yui clock go's it'll run?" Inquired Gap Johnson of Rumpus Ridge. English Village Bridges Measured for Dowries A quaint ceremony Is observed at Itoydon, In Norfolk, England, the Philadelphia Inquirer says. About 300 years ago the lord of the manor bequeathed the sum of 1.000, the Interest from which was to be voted annually to provide dowries for four brides. Under the terms of the bequest the money has to be divided between the youngest, the eldest, the shortest and the tallest brides mar-ried during the course of each year In the parish church. This entails the of the bride." After the marriage ceremony the bride and bridegroom proceed to the vestry to sign the register and the bride Is then measured by the officiat-ing minister. In order that her cor-rect stature may be ascertained she Is required to remove her shoes and let down her hair. At the end of the .year the marriage records are exam-ined and the dowries awarded to those qualified to receive them. GETTING THE RIGHT KIND OF FOOD MUCH has been written about the of a properly balanced diet for both children and adults. The need of milk, fresh fruits and vege-tables has been often urged. A cer-tain amount of meat Is known to be necessary. How can the average housewife know whether she Is feed-ing her family In the proper propor-tion? She can't stop to weigh or to calculate the exact number of calo-ries In each. She needs some general practical working rule by which to check up her food purchases and to estimate the relative amount of each kind of food she Is giving her family. Volumes have been written by doc-tors, chemists, dietitians and food ex-perts, but the real need Is something that will make It possible for the busy mother to answer the question, "What shall we have for dinner today?" and to be sure that her unswer will give her family the food It needs and In proper quantities and proportions. In a recent book on "Food Prod-ucts," Prof. Henry C. Sherman, the n authority on foods, has tried to answer this question, not In terms of food values and calories, but in the very practical terms of dollars and cents. , Nor Is he simply theoriz-ing, as he says that the plan has been followed In his own household with marked success. The advantage Is that It is suited to any family, of any number and of any Income. How much money do you pay out each week for footl? It may be five or ten or twenty or fifty tlollurs. No matter. Divide tbls amount into five equal parts, Spend one-tift- for fruits and vegetables, one-fifl- for meat, fish and eggs, one-fift- h for milk, one-fift- h for breads and cereals, and one-Hft- h for ' sugars, futs (such as butter, salad oils, etc.) and miscel-laneous groceries. Such a diet would probably be not only more healthful but also more eco-nomical than tbe average, It would provide less meat and more fruits and vegetables. If this seems too mucJi trouble, two simple rules can be followed. These are, spend at least as much for milk as you do for meats of all kinds, and as much for fruits and fresh vege-tables as you do for either. Check up your bills next month and see how you're running. Try this plan and see how if works J |
