born in ili sheffield Eng lanho landbo was trained to habits of industry and self reliance which he found fouad invaluable qualities in hia his labors to build up a home and procure a sustain austain ance in the fastnesses fast nesses of the kocl rocky y mountains mr broom emigrated to america in 1849 lie ile remained but a short time in the states before he resumed his journey westward to ulah utah on his arrival in salt like valley he camo came to weber county and adopted agricultural pursuits which bb followed with success for several years his ilia farm was located on the rich willow bottoms in marriotti Marri otts settle ment mr brocas meadow land yielded heavy crops of good hay hayy which especially during the construction a of the transcontinental r railroad through this country was in great demand and brought a good price in 1869 with a foresight of agdens future mr broom purchased a full corner lot on an main and fifth streets on which ho he commenced the erection of several business houses iio ile continued cont t until he had hid built HID nine good sized stores all of which were soon occupied and brought him in a good rental re sital in a short time lim after mr broom sold out his farming landane Ian lan dand was enabled to live on the rov enuce derived from hia his other real estate in 1873 he went to san francisco and purchased property in the bay city where ho be continued to reside until 1879 when he returned to og den the growth of which had bean been ra rapid pid during his absence intending to make this city his permanent home and being aware awre of the great need of a respectable hotel to meet the requirements of the traveling community who desire to spend a few days das in the hub ortho of the western universe mr broom finally determined on the erection of or the needed structure with wit it this end in view he notified his tenants that at a given date the build ings go must be vacated and on the first of march last he commenced to tear down the old buildings and at the beginning of april commenced the excavation for the foundation of the present noble structure which is BO so much admired for its beauty oas and utility adds value and contributes so materially to build up our city I THE TUB HOTEL covers an area of 66 feet on main street by feet on fifth street the part of tha the building on main fronts to tho the east and that on fifth street faces to the south it is built of the beat fireproof fire proof brick and is three stories high on the first floor on main street there are throe three elegant stores the first of or which is 66 by 18 feet fitted up in in elegant style and is occupied by mr lamoni grix one of agdens enterprising merchants who has filled it with a vry very fine assortment of general merchandise the middle apartment is 22 x 66 feet and is supplied with appointments complete of the newest style and is oc 00 aupied by parsons bros and potter duryea the tors fors mer firm are booksellers and gener al dealers in polite literature the latter firm occupy the r south side as a jewelry establishment tho the large room on the corner is occupied csan as an elegant drug store by mcnutt tutt hurlbut a description of which appears in another part of this journal the first room on the floor on fifth street is 30 x 60 and is designed for the office baggage room ac to beneath this apartment is a i rial establishment at the hands of whose artist the patrons of the hotel can secure a shampooing and easy shave the billiard hall is 30 x 52 feet and its appointments will be equal to any other on the pacific slope at the west end of the building and facing the south is tho the apart ment feet fitted in neat tasteful style and occupied by mr john Q G Chambers the pioneer bookseller news dealer ac entering from the south on fifth is also an alley way feet leading to the premises in the rear of the hotel and another alley way six feet fact wide running through the building east and west vies t on this floor in the west end and odilie of the building are the culinary departments the kito kitchens hens laider larder laundry kc with ranges and all other appliances ances of the latest improved styles water is abundant fo for r all necessary purposes on the second story there are 31 elegant hotel parlors with bay windows fronting the south and east and commanding delightful views of the mountain and landscape scenery for many miles distance these beautiful rooms average in size feet to which are attached antero ante rooms onis with appointments complete in addition to these is the magnificent dining hall feet splendidly arranged lighted and painted the third story also contains thirty five rooms similar in size and 11 construction conet ruction to those on the middle story with bath rooms and all biber conveniences which contri contribute loute to ti the e comfort and home boine feelings of the gueta guests this hand lian dome structure tute haa has nino
