| Show THE E R TRACK EXTENSION A few words on the subject lie submitted in our yesterdays issue we pul dished a communication from citi zen in regard to a petition now in circulation to remove the U C R R track from fifth down to wall or at least to prevent an extension of the cami up fifth street we had not at taft time apace in which to comment upon this affair but think that a few words on the subject will not bo out of order at the present time As we understand it a petition was presented to the council a short time since by S W sears eq asking permission per to extend the U C track which is already as far up fifth street as the corner of franklin to the granary of Z C M I situated between franklin and young streets this was we understand granted and accordingly the ties for the work have beau strung along the north side of fifth street preparatory to being put down As soon a this became known the property owners were somewhat indignant indig cant and hence the petition against the extension above mentioned was put into circulation it is also understood that mr reeve the agent for tho U co has refused to permit the extension lne to be joined to that of the utah central at the corner of fiffi and franklin streets having received no orders from his company authorizing him to permit such conjunction it is a well known fact that fifth street is ho only one that can be used by parties engaged in shipping goods to the depot As it is there are several tracks to cross before reaching said depot and wo think that the property owners on this street have at least the shadow of a just cause for complaint on this head alone again if this extension be permitted the danger of ion of life and limb will be great an immense number of teams pass along this street daily and seldom a day passes that one or more animals do not get frightened when coming within the vicinity of the several tracks between main street and the depot the railroad has plenty land and we think that it has already conada too near town with its coal yard office etc we do not wish to blame any party but will say that if one mercantile establishment is permitted to run an extension line through the city to its place of business others will demand the same privilege and with reason too in behalf of the property owners of the city for public safety and with a desire to see our high ways preserved from mutilation we respectfully ask the city council to reconsider and revoke the grant to extend the track any further east fron ho place it now occupies |
