An unstandlng pair of "browns, tho horses were the pride of tho fire-fighters until they became the cause of their disgrace. The browns swept out of the engine house to their first flro In a manner to make old firemen speak with happy reminiscence of the horso-drawn days. Then came a night alarm. Back on the farm, Betty and Billy had been accustomed n'ot to stir from sundown to sunrise, and no din of fire gong or urging by anxious fire-men fire-men would move them to answer tho alarm. All the fire department's split-second aids to a quick start wero lost on tho browns. Thev refused to budge, the firemen had to go to tho blaze with qhemical lines, and the town folks laughed. The firemen vowed tho thing would not happen again and the horses were put through a stiff training. They went to the day fires with spirit, and the fire crew hoped they understood. But anothef night alarm came, and again Betty and Billy would not move onco more- tho firemen went afoot, hose in hand, and again tho town laughed at their discomfiture.
