Stevens of Pacific Coast Bureau Illustrates His b Address Illuminating his talk with a number of stereopticon slides, and" a rod of moving picture film snowing tho de-vasation, de-vasation, loss of money and life due to tho careless guarding of property and the consequent ravage of fire, Jay W. Slovens, interested a crowded meeting of the Rotary club hero at noon today. Mr- Stevens is the manager of tho Fire Prevention Bureau of the Pacific. To illustrate his points he said that Iho first fire in San Francisco occurred oc-curred on Christmas, 18-19. Immediately Immedi-ately afterwardB a firo department was organized. In tho fifties five large fires occurred. In 3902 H. G. Sullivan, fircchiof, urged that a better bet-ter firo fighting system be installed, but his plan was laughed at. On April IS, 1906, Chief Sullivan was killed in the big fire, Every suggestion sugges-tion he made has since been carried out. Mr. Stevens said 23,000 lives were lost in fires in the United States last year. Of these 35 per cent or more , were preventable. Tomorrow Mr. Stevens addresses the Commercial club of Brigham City from which place he journeys to attend at-tend the annual convention of the National Na-tional Fire Protection association of Chicago. on |
