Boy! I If ydu were absent, you missed the treat of your life. The wrestling contest con-test staged at the Alhambra theatre j last night between Ad Santel, world's champion light heavyweight, and Jack1 Harbertson, challenger, was without J doubt the greatest exhibition of mat art ever given in this city. The first fall was earned by the champion with a front body scissors and an arm J lock In one hour, four minutes and ten seconds, while Harbertson took tho second fall in 44 minutes and 30 seconds sec-onds with a headlock. Due to the fact that Police Gazette rules were adopted the match ended In a draw, with neither man able to win a third fall before the two-hour period was up. In the special feature. Art Chester and Young Appollo wrestled a 30-mln-( ute draw. The curtain raiser was a seven-man battle royal "mat" contest with Clarence Preshaw the final -winner. In the feature event, speed, cleverness clever-ness and strength were exhibited by both men. From the tap of the gong until the time limit arrived both men were on their toes eager to tussel and with eyes alert. Both Men Active. The first half hour found both men tearing in with the class of polished veterans. At the end of twenty-four minutes Harbertson worked for five minutes on Santel with a body scissors scis-sors and an arm lock but the champion cham-pion after suffering from the punishment' punish-ment' administered by the local man finallv wiggled his body free and both men took the mat -with a spurt of speed that startled the many fans present. At the end of the forty-five minutes period Jack again forced the champion and repeated his feat only to lose his hold and both men again tore in like trained tigers and from that time on until the first fall was obtained, by Santel, the match was filled with ac tion, with the men splitting uuuuia. Santel Wins First Fall. Santel worked on Jack for four minutes min-utes before he finally won the first fall. The local man displayed wonderful wonder-ful staving ability after being placed in one "of the most dangerous positions in the game. When the clock ticked one hour four minutes Harbertson's shoulders were within a fraction of an inch from the floor, and despite the fact that Jack labored like a trojan in an attempt to gain freedom, Santel clamped on the front scissors and arm lock, with Referee Ben Petre slapping the champion on tho hack. After the usual rest period both men again took up their labors and during the 44 minutes that they worked on the mat the many fans present had occasion oc-casion to gaze with wonderment at the clever work of both stars. First Harbertson would place tho champion in a dangerous hold, only to see Ad break loose and Santel realized the same experience. At the end of thirty-five thirty-five minutes Santel had a double arm lock on the local boy and although some of the fans were heard to bellow forth "defeat," Harbertson broke free. The next eight minutes were full of action with both men toiling. At the end of the ninth minute both men wero on their toes and in a flaBh both hit tho mat. In the fall to the mat Har-bertson Har-bertson clamped on a headlock, which won him the second fall in 44 minutes 30 seconds. Time Limit. The twelve minutes left for tho third fall found both men on their toes despite de-spite tho fact that they were both tired From the tap of the gong until, the contest ended both were trying for I a winning hold and although both-, ' JM proved unsuccessful, Harbertson had, I an arm lock on the champion when. .time was called. The three thousand fans present. 'pronounced the match the greatest, ' jcver staged in Ogden. Great credit JM is due Jack Harbertson for his show, .ing against the champion. Harbert;-son Harbert;-son is one of three men that - have , wrestled Ad Santel to a draw in the ' lH last ten years. Jack was in 100 per , ; cont better condition last night than -when he met Santel here in January , ' and surely displayed his class. Best Ever. ' , Jf Ben Petre of Green River, Wyom-, : ing, referee of the contest and a mane J who has followed the game for many" 1 years, had the following to say: "f was tne greatest matcn mat i nave ever witnessed and the fans who miss- ed the contest missed a world beater." ll Both Harbertson and Santel "worked ! from start to finish and, believe me" when I say Harbertson wrestled his1 jH greatest match I am putting it mildly . Santel is one of the. wonders of the' world on the mat and the showing of both the champion and Harbertsofr) . ;H was truly wonderful." Santel after the contest, said: "Har- j H bertson is a much improved man and, i LH believe me, he surely gave me the con- '1 test of my life. I have been in the I 'H mat game for many years and havc ! jH held the title for more than ten years but I have never during my career ex'-" 8, jjH perienced such a contest as the one lH last night. I gave the fans' the best T ffll had and Harbertson also dished out il what I believe his greatest match." Il Dovn With the Crabs. flH "I am well satisfied with the out- ll come," said Harbertson, "and it cer-, EH tainly was the greatest match I have lH ever been in. Anyone who thinks that ll both of us were not working are surely fcjl mistaken and as for action well, it iH has any match cheated I have ever lH had anything to do with or have ever 1 witnessed, santel is tne wonder or jH the world. The champipn displayed speed galore tonight and dseerves credit for his work. , "After working . for more than an hour on the mat against such a man the cheap 'sports,' those who general- H ly receive a pass, as usual, started . their howl about the contest being roT- : 'H ten, and that is one. phase whicll should be stopped. No one realizes the work, pain, and agony one goes r througli in such a contest, and the' , sooner the knockers in Ogden waker j up to that fact the better for thcr j , sport." Harbertson's idea of the follower. who brand any contest as rotten, is ab' JH solutely correct. Some Ogden fans tl have that fault, and the sooner it is H forgotten the better. A match of the IH type displayed last night in New York would have set Broadway crazy so jH let's hope that the crabs in future tilts I IH will wear a muzzle if they attend, or i IH better still, stay at home. Wo are for jH square sport and. for clean sport and JH the contest last night held both with. no room for argument. If Ogden is ! IH to be placed to the fore in athletics, IH the knockers must be defeated, and the KH sooner the better. And again we say 'twas the great est match ever staged here and woijd'. of credit is due to Jack Harbertson " for his wonderful showing against the 1 jH champion. On the other hand, Santcl'fj h work was likewise of the highest order and those of you who missed th I contest missed tho greatest spqr.t event staged In. Ogden for a long pqcv iod. t |
