Show Room Outside of School Rented for Mound Fort District More than 150 persons attended a meeting of the Parent-Teachers' association asso-ciation recently held In the Mound Fort school at which plans for the new library in the Third ward were 'discussed. Selections by the Junior I High school orchestra and a chorus by 'the school students featured thc'nieet-! thc'nieet-! Ing. A reading by Mrs. M. Hoist was well received. Members of the library committee reported that the library in the school had proven rather unsatisfactory and that as a result, Mrs. Minerva Shaw had rented them a front room for library purposes. The library .will now be open to all persons living north of the Washington bridge. Contributions from various sources have been received re-ceived to carry on the work temporarily. tempor-arily. Branch Library. Later the organization hopes to have an appropriation from the Carnegie library fund and build a branch library in this district Miss Mary Elizabeth Downey, slate i librarian, outlined the growth of the city library and declared that much credit was due Miss June Pierce, the principal, and teachers, and parents of the Mound Fort district for the advance ad-vance in the library movement Mayor Speaks. Mayor Frank Francis spoke of tho various needs of the community and assured tho people of the Third" ward that these needs were being considered. consid-ered. Ho gave his hearty support to the library movement by saying that a library affords a companionship with the best thoughts of the foremost writers writ-ers of the past and present. He concluded con-cluded by saying that tho city com mission could not escape tho duty of aiding in providing the Mound i'ort district with a library, but with paving, pav-ing, parks and sewers as well. Tho Rev. John E. Carver spoke of the necessity of more funds for library work and outlined tho great advances the Ogden library has made with limited lim-ited means. Dr. Edward Rich approved tho actvi-ties actvi-ties that have been carried on in regard re-gard to tho library and pledged tho support of the school board in the installation in-stallation of a new library in the Third ward. Judge George Barker, William A. Budge and John Farr gave interesting inter-esting talks in support of tho library. A report submitted by the entertainment entertain-ment committee showed that $126 .had been received at a recent entertainment entertain-ment and after expenses were paid, nearly 60 remained the treasury. A numbor of questions Jn regard to the paving of the street railway tracks along Washington avenue were asked by A. K. Foulger and S. B. Bruertou. The program closed with, a piano solo by Mrs. Vera F. Beason. |
