Peterson of Richfield, has been j cited to appear In tho United States district court in Salt Lake to shov cause why a carload of sugar, which was seized Saturday by government officers, should not be confiscated, according to reports from Salt Lake. ' The car, containing 500 sacks of sugar, was seized following' the issuance of a, complaint by United Statca District: Attorney Isaac Blair Evans, in which it is alleged to bo charged that tho j shipment was being made for the i purpose of hoarding. , Nell is said to be manager of thej Western Market. Mr. Jackson claims tho sugar is the property of J. W. Nell of Ogden, who is alleged to havo purchased the sugar from H. S. Anderson of Salt Lake, who in turn, Mr. Jackson said, purchased the commodity from J. N. Peterson, a grocer of rllchfield. Mr. Jackson asserts tho sugar cost tho original buyer approximately $11 a bag and has increased through Its various deals to a valuo of 324 a bag, the price claimed to havo been paid for it by Nell. Judging from the current cur-rent price in Omaha, the officer says, Neil would havo sold at a profit of possibly $G a bag. Neil, Anderson and Peterson have been cited to appear In federal court and show cause why the sugar should not be confiscated. This order will not be heard until the latter part of June, said Mr. Jackson, because Judgo Tillman D. Johnson of the United States district court, will not bo holding hold-ing court until about that time. At present Judge Johnson is acting as Judge in the court of appeals at St. Paul, Minn., and word from that city is to th'e effect the cases being- tried will not be finished until tho latter part of next month. In case the government wins in its effort to confiscate tho sugar when the order to show cause is heard, Nell, Anderson and Peterson will be charged with violation of the Lever act, said Mr. Jackson. |
