The government, therefore, there-fore, will bo out of pocket about $6,000,000 when it has finally settled with the railroad company. Tho operating revenues of the road for 1919 were $170,000,000 approximately. approxi-mately. This was $15,780,000 more than the same item in 191S. Tho operating expenses were just under $130,000,000 and were $15,795, 000 moro than tho previous year. So that the net revenue from railway opera- tions showed a decrease of only $15,-000. $15,-000. Out of the $40,000,000 in this acciout the railroad paid taxes of $6, SI 6,000. The gross Income of the road was not far from $35,000,000. From this the main items for deduction were rent of freight cars, nearly $1,200,000, and joint facility rents of more than half 'a million. In Utah 72,000 tons of freight were hauled and the revenue therefrom was not quite $4,200,000. The Utah freight was hauled at a revenue of 1.21 cents per ton mile; while the system sys-tem as a wholo derived 1.31 cents per Ion mile. The revenue per passenger mile was 2.6 ccnt3 in Utah, ns ngainst an average of 2.4 cents charged on tho system. Manufapturers contribute 10.0 per cent of tho system's freight, while the livestock industry, adds onjy 4.5 per cent of the total freight carried. Some Idea of tho magnitude of the system may seen from tho fact that It has an average of 54.37S omployes and paid thorn last year- $S3.734,000.
