Show I GIANTS AND YANKEES ! TO BE WELL MANAGED I (By Jack Veiock, International Ncwg Sporting Editor.) NEW YORK. Nov 17.- -The Giants and Yankees nre going to be well man aged next season A least, they ought to be. With two veteran major league pilots pi-lots at the head of each team the New York Nationals and their rival Amerl cjni league "bunkios" at the Polo grounds are jotting n precedent. In a managerial way, for ihouch many ma Jor league clubs have coaches who either eith-er have been managers or are expor lrnc-d nough to rjualify. 1921 will mark the first time In bar-eball history ihat so raan hiph salaried field gen erals have been signed by two Clubfl. John McGraw, as vice president and manager or the Giants, will have ihe l eieran Hugh Jennings as his firs', lieutenant. -McGraw has several tune been on the verge of retiring from the active management of ihe team, ar cording lo the wags, but once h pen nant race gets hot it would be Just as hard to keep McGraw "oul ol there" as it would bo lo keep a ja?7 band si . lent. ARE OLD PALS McGraw and Jennings in old teammates team-mates They played together on the old Baltimore Orioles and were room ies during their plainc. das. They have been friends el er since, and it :s almost a foregone conclusion thai the will "get alone' There is an old sa- mg the one about the cooks and the1 hroth but the Giants should be well managed, regardle--The Yanks, with Miller Muggins and Ed Barrow to handle the reins, were the ftrst to sign two "managers" for 1921. Barrow was signed as business manager of the team thp same day that Huggins autographed his 1921 contract, and 'hough Barrow's duties are supposed to bo largely confined to the business end of the club, It is almost certain that he will lend Hug gins hie asslstanco In handling the team on the field, and especially the players. BAR ROW BIG ASSET Huggins, because of 111 health, has often found himself unequal if curb ing his players. With Unrrow at his elbow he will find the task much easier, eas-ier, for Barrow is a baseball man of the driving caliber, as any player who I has been under his management will i testify. Barrow's success with the Red Sox I has proven his qualities as a man lager. Huggins, who knows baseball ! inside out. and Barrow, always ready j for any emergency, should he able to drle ihe Yanks a' break neck speed. The value of an assistant mr.nager or a coach is attested to by the fact that seven American league and five National league club', have adopted the I system of carrying them. The Yan-j Yan-j kees have Charley O'lieary. in addition to Barrow. The Browns have Lee iFohl; the Indians. McAllister; the Red 'Sox. Eddie Holly; the Athletics. Dan jny Murphy; the Senators, George NK Bride, and the Tigers. Jack Coombs. In the National league the Giants have Hughle Jennings: ihe Braves, j Oscar Dugey; the Cubs. Cozy Dolan: I the Cardinals. Joe Sugden. and Carl 'Lundgren. and the Pirates. Bill Mr-Kcchnle. Mr-Kcchnle. Not all of these men have I come to the en.l of their careers as 'players, and now and then break into a game. Oihers are men who have .grown gray and wrinkled in ihe game I w hich the.' began to play before most of the present crop of players were I born |
