Nov. 18 The Black Hills prospector, that unique character who has furnished many a tlitme for novels built around man's quest for gold, practically ha.s disappeared disap-peared from South Dakota. D- C Yates of Lead. S. D . declared today in an ' address before the twenty-third annual convention of the American Mining congress. Passing of the prospector has been due primarily to the fa-"t, according to Yates, that "the gold taken from the mines does not have sufficient value to pay the- cost of production." He described the gold industry in the Black hills as being 'in a state of disintegration dis-integration " 'In every mining community of the hills are to be found empty houses and deserted prospector's cabins." he said Then gold Industry. ' he continued, "is face to face with a grave crisis, brought about by tho world war and the shortsighted policy adopted by the povernment of breeding without feeding feed-ing the one industry absolutely es.sen- tlal to the life of any civilized nation at all times." |
